Chances Card: Job Search for Skilled Workers in Germany
The "Chancenkarte" (Chances Card) is a new opportunity for skilled workers to enter Germany and search for a job. Introduced on June 1, 2024, as part of Germany's Skilled Labor Immigration Act, this visa aims to address labor shortages by allowing more flexibility for job seekers with fewer bureaucratic hurdles.

1. What is the Chancenkarte?
The Chancenkarte is a residence permit under § 20a of the Residence Act, which allows skilled workers to stay in Germany for up to one year to find employment. It is available to those with recognized qualifications or those who score at least six points in the new points-based system.
Benefits:
Work while searching: Up to 20 hours per week allowed.
Flexibility: Allows trial work with different employers.
Less bureaucracy: No extensive recognition procedures required before entry.
2. How to Apply for the Chancenkarte?
Applications can be submitted to a German diplomatic mission in the home country, either online or in person.
Requirements:
Option 1: Recognized qualification (German degree or an internationally recognized diploma).
Option 2: If you are not considered a skilled worker, you can apply by scoring at least six points based on qualifications and experience.
Scoring System:
4 points: Foreign qualification with partial recognition.
3 points: 5 years of work experience or good German at B2 level.
2 points: 2 years of work experience, German at B1 level, or under 35 years old.
1 point: German at A2 level, a prior stay in Germany for at least 6 months in the past 5 years, age between 35-40, or English at C1 level.
Financial Proof: Applicants must demonstrate financial means to support themselves, either via a blocked account with at least €1,027/month, a sponsorship declaration, or proof of secondary employment. A side job of up to 20 hours per week is allowed.
3. Validity of the Chancenkarte
The Chancenkarte is generally valid for one year, with an extension possible if a job offer is obtained and approved by the Federal Employment Agency. If not, the stay will end when the card expires.
4. What Happens After the Job Search?
Once a job is secured, you can apply for a new residence permit with the Foreigners' Office to work permanently in Germany. It is also possible to transition to another residence title, such as the EU Blue Card.
Conclusion:
The Chancenkarte offers skilled workers a streamlined process to shape their future in Germany, addressing labor shortages and promoting immigration. It is an important step for integrating skilled professionals into the German workforce.
